America 250: Gilbert and Jane Stuart: Father-Daughter Duo Paint America’s Founding Fathers

Loading Map....
In 1795, America’s capital was in Philadelphia. The talented and peripatetic portraitist Gilbert Stuart decided that’s where his future lay, and he was determined to make his fortune by painting America’s first President, …and many other Founding Fathers. Stuart’s daughter Jane assisted her father, putting her talented brush to canvas to meet the huge demand for portraits of America’s leaders. In 2026, as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it seems a wonderful time to celebrate this painterly father-daughter duo as well.
