In 1945, the US High Command ordered 202 paintings to be shipped to the USA for their “”safekeeping,”” just months after the Monuments Men evacuated thousands of these artworks from locations where the Germans had hidden the treasures away. In April 1948 the Berlin Masterpieces went on a nationwide tour before finally being restituted to Berlin.  While the tour exposed millions of Americans to the glories of this art, the story of exporting these paintings seems as “”morally dubious”” today as it did to the Monuments Men and the international art world decades ago. Join us on May 16th at 2:00 pm for Carol’s next lecture.
