The origins of WWI are more complicated and interesting than usually thought.  Major international issues created immense political, economic and military tensions.  And then, remarkably, the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand set off a chain reaction of military alliances and army mobilizations that the great European powers were powerless to stop.  The face of warfare would never be the same again.
